What kind of hard drives do I need for mining?

For the purposes of mining Burstcoin, you are only concerned with getting the largest capacity hard drives at the cheapest price you can find.  However, it is prudent to consider how you will plot your hard drives before you do anything.  There are two hard drive technologies you need to be aware of before you start plotting:

  1. Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR).  Most hard drives use PMR technology and these drives are ideal for both plotting and mining.  For plotting, I typically prefer to use two or more 7200 RPM consumer NAS drives from HGST or WD due to their speed, reliability, and 3 year warranties.

  2. Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR).  Only a few consumer hard drives currently use SMR, but these drives are ideal for mining due to featuring large capacites at lower cost.  However, plotting directly to SMR drives is painfully slow due to the extremely low random write speeds of these drives.  It is typically faster to plot to a PMR drive or SSD and then copy the plot files over to an SMR drive later.
